I know that collars are controversial, and I'm not trying to start a debate over what kind of collars our dogs should wear and when they should wear them. I gather those things have been--and continue to be--discussed quite well here.

I just want to say that last week, I ordered a breakaway collar and matching leash from Chinook & Co., and when it arrived, I found that they sent the wrong leash. late Saturday night, I sent the company an e-mail explaining the mistake and asking for instructions on returning and replacing the leash. By 7:00am SUNDAY MORNING, I had a message in my Inbox from one of their people, apologizing for the error. They said they would be sending a replacement in Monday's mail, and that I should go ahead and keep the first leash as a spare.

Personally, I find this kind of service to be all too rare.

So if you're planning to get your little one a new collar--or know anyone who is--I highly recommend the Keepsafe Breakaway Collar from Chinook: http://www.breakawaycollar.com/

Cheers,

WOW that is nice!

Hi Dooley and Buraian!
There is a lengthy discussion on here about collars so I am not going to add alot...but please read it! I NEVER knew until earlier this year about collars and that was through our obedience class...I'm a collar collector so I have many but for different uses. My suggestion would be to use a break away at home with his tags on BUT a nightengale(sp) or buckle with an ID on when out for walks...if you read back you'll see why!!!!! You can pick up a cheap buckle collar...I check out clearance items...many times it's because of the color but if it's just for walks who cares!
Livvy has sent Dooley a special pic!

Jane,

Thanks for pointing me to that. I think I did read that thread before we got Dooley. You know, there's no perfect choice in collars--as in most things. I think we just have to be careful at all times. The story of the dog who got loose at a rest stop was chilling, but when travelling, we're most likely to keep Dooley on his car harness and attach the leash to that. I really like the breakaway, personally. I think if you use it correctly, it's pretty secure. (Without any scientific data to back that up, of course!) My main problem is that the swivel hook on most leashes I've seem is a little too small to hold both loops comfortably. I'm thinking of replacing the one on our leash with a rock climbing carabiner--something strong enough to bet your life on.

Yes, Buraian I have to agree the break away is my favorite too but for Livvy I do use a buckle because she is more likely to "spook"...why I don't really know but because she is more fearful and her recall isn't as good I use it for her. Any of my other dogs I use the breakaway! How does Dooley like his walks? That's nice if you can use his car harness also!

What I want is a very thin breakaway that is not meant to hold their leashes, just for tags when out on a walk, then a martingale collar that I would use for walking and can easily remove if I let them off-leash, but will fit comfortably WITH the breakaway and their tags.

If anyone sees one, let me know. Think "cat safety collar" for the tags, but in a dog length. I think my male wears 16" collar and the female is just a bit smaller.

if you have a sewing machine a thin, lightweight collar is not hard to make with a few dollars worth of cloth. In fact with a few dollars worth of cloth you could probably make one for every day of the week and one for church too.
