MyCorgi.com

I'm new to MyCorgi.com. In fact, I'm new to dogs all together- I'm looking to get my first dog ever and I've decided, after a lot of research and thinking, that I want a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I've been scouring the internet and have thus far failed to find a breeder in the Houston area. I've seen a few north of Dallas online, but I have no way of knowing whether they are good, bad, etc. What I really need is a good recommendation along with maybe some help knowing which breeder to pick, especially if all I have is a website. Obviously, I'd like to go visit every one of these folks but I can't really tolerate a 9-10 hour drive round trip just to check things out and come home empty handed. Any advice at all, actually, would be appreciated!

Hi Josh,

Welcome to My Corgi and The Houston group! :) I purchased my Corgi through a breeder in Porter, Texas which is only about an hour away from Houston, depending on traffic of course. Haha. Her name is Nancy Kretchmer. I thought she was an excellent breeder, she has been in the business for a good 15 years or more. They're all AKC show quality, but she usually has a "pet" quality dog in every litter. Now, I must say, she is a bit expensive. I paid 650.00 for Jack, but his siblings, who were sold as 'show dogs' were 1500.00. I'll give you her information and perhaps she can help you. :) Good luck!

consider a rescue if you do not need a show dog. We got a wonderful Pembroke Welsh Corgi that way.

Absolutely I'm willing to rescue a Corgi... I filled out that application a couple days ago and haven't heard back yet. Glad to hear you had a good experience though!

I posted a link on the front page to the Houston Pembroke Fanciers club. I've been to a couple of their events and they might be another place to contact for recommendations. It seems that you are going about your search for a puppy in the correct way by not buying from a pet store or from just any breeder. Not all puppies are created equal! Mr. Jack makes a good point about "pet" quality versus "show" quality. Personally, I don't think $650 is that high for a Corgi that you know is coming from quality lineage.
One of mine is a breeder puppy and the other is a rescue and is such a sweet angel (almost as if he knows he was saved) and transitioned into our household amazingly well. I am the first one to encourage rescues, but keep in mind if you are a first time dog owner you want to make sure you get the right rescue. I wouldn't recommend you get one that was given up for behavioral issues. These guys can be stubborn and spunky at times and a rescue with behavior issues may be more than you bargained for. All that being said, there are rescues with no behavior problems that were given up because of an owner's situation and that might be one more well-suited to get your dog ownership feet wet. The key to a rescue is patience, you can't rush the right rescue for you!
I wish you the best on your search and feel free to message any questions you might have, if I can't answer them I can certainly find the person that can. Happy Corgi Hunting!

We got Penny from a breeder in New Waverly, just north of Houston. Her name is Linda Drilling and her email address is
drilling4@gmail.com
I found one of her postings on puppyfind.com. The link is below. Her contact info is on there as well. The puppy on this post has the same birthday as Penny! I hope you find a great corgi companion!

I found mine from a breeder online that referred me to someone else with puppies. Try contacting Lone Star Corgis or Overo Corgis. They might be able to tell you of someone who has any litters. Alot of the breeders know each other so they have a network and are able to direct you to people that aren't on the internet.

I would make the same recommendation for Nancy Kretchmer in Porter, TX. She was highly recommended from another high-caliber San Antonio Corgi breeder (Wisky River Corgis). She's been breeding Corgis for a real long time and wanted only the best for her pups. I know she's associated with Tiffany Kennels, but we didn't go through them. We received a good home recommendation from Wisky River Corgis and that's how we were able to purchase Ein on the condition that he'd be a family pet and neutered ASAP. We paid about the same ($600) for our pup and he is well worth it!!! If you're not convinced just take a look at Ein and Mr. Jack's pics!

Oh and I forgot to mention that Ms. Kretchmer also does Corgi Rescue for the Houston area so that's definitely a possibility! Come to think of it, when we got Ein (just after Christmas) she was looking to place a Corgi with a good home!

We found our breeder through the Houston Chronicle, so you could check there and see if anyone has any litters. The website for the classifieds is: http://chron.kaango.com/

I live between Seguin and Houston. I raise corgis and can get you in touch with several people that have purchased from me. I have just recently moved to this area. So only have had one litter since in this area besides this litter. Let me know if you are still looking I do have a litter on the ground right now. They will be 8 weeks this Thursday.

I live in Houston and am looking for a petite female corgi. We lost our 13 1/2 yr old Heidi a few months ago and miss her terribly. Heidi was sable and beautiful and sweet as can be. We'd love either a sable or red/white.
Thanks, Karen kpatrinely@yahoo.com
