Profile

Hometown:
Fort Collins, CO
About Me:
I have volunteered at a local animal shelter for 5 years and I get to see soo many great dogs of all shapes and sizes. Rubi is my first dog as an adult. I had a heeler as a teen and did not have a clue what I was doing. I rehomed my little heeler with a ranch hand who though she was fabulous. After that experience I was determined to find out as much as I could about dog and cat behavior and that has become my passion.
About My Corgi(s):
Rubi is a 6 year old tri corgi. She is either a mix or a poorly bred corgi because she is 33 lbs and not overweight. My husband and I adopted her from the shelter where I volunteer. Rubi behaves like an angel inside the house, likes cats, LOVES children, and getting her belly rubbed. She does have "short-dog" syndrome (also why she was surrendered) but we are workin' on that.

Didn't want to take up anymore space on there with off topic info so here ya go.

Some of the more notable biologists and researchers are David Mech (probably the most known), David Paul Stiles, Alexandra Semyonova, Ray & Lorna Coppinger, Peter Neville, Morgan Spector, John Paul Scott, John Fuller and Beth Duman. As for dominance behavior I think the word gets thrown around too much, and many things that aren't dominance behavior are labeled as such. Dominance displays are uncommon among wolves and are usually shown durring feedings and mating. Dogs can't think in terms of rank. Here's some links

Hi Amy, my rescued tri also has short dog syndrome...she's not called the fun sucker outer for nothing! She's classic alpha corgi femail I adore her and she's made huge progress in the last year. She's going through another adjustment phase since I've added another rescue to the group.

would love to hear more about your training/working on 'short dog syndrome'. Our Le-Le has it. Plays great with other corgis but shows teeth & growls at bigger dogs. Not sure what to do since this is new behavior. Plus sometimes she growls at my husband if he is wearing baseball cap or something has changed with his appearance.

Update on Rubi's "short-dog": Rubi saw a dog today, turned and looked at me! Whoo hoo! She was checkin' in like "Hey mom, what should we do?", instead of behaving aggressively. It was a fabulous moment after so much training. We walk twice a day and practice sitting, laying, walking nice, and paying attention throughout the walk. It is soo nice to see it all paying off!

Our family rescued Fred seven years ago, and he has "short dog" as well. I have posted before, but it's been a month or so. (busy summer) He really only likes other Corgi's. We have been dealing with anxiety, and the fact that he's jealous of our adopted cat since Nov. Also, I read Tammy's post, and to add to that one; Fred likes to walk on the back of our sofa. I know now that it's because he wants to be up at our level.

I've had Faye since June 15. Maybe I need to give her more time. She doesn't leave my side at all. She howls when I go to the bathroom. Poor girl didn't get much attention where she used to be.

Rescue Corgis are the best. Mine has "short-dog" syndrome too. I didn't realize it until she totally started hating on a Siberian Husky. She wasn't scared, but she really wanted to boss the poor guy around and even marked her territory.

Hi from Tammey this time. I didn't steal the poster, they gave it to me but I had to take it down myself. Anyway, I know what short dog syndrom is...it is when Bear likes to walk on every high curb or short wall or pic-nic table etc. It is when Bear will lie on a 5 foot tall stack of furniture pads contentedly for hours at a time while we work... It is basically when a short dog is happiest when he is at eye level with everyone around him. Since he really is the big dog as we all know. Have a good day!

"Short-dog syndrome" for those who don't know is the dog-version of Napoleon complex. (After Napoleon Bonaparte who was supposedly felt inferior because of his short stature). I tell Rubi that those other dogs did NOT steal your legs or dock your tail so don't get mad at them.
