So we went out, looked at the puppies, got a puppy, brought it home.
The question was, now what? Sitting on the floor in a daze as she wandered between us we plotted. Only to have a knock on the door almost ten minutes into the planning.
Of course, two of our good friends had come to visit sleepy town (I now dub it sleepy town) who had the year before. Perfect timing as it usually was around these parts. A few hugs and an understanding about the new arrival they left to venture to other apartments and old friends with plans for later on.
Back to the .
DarkCreator quickly had the set up and we decided to place it next to the couch on the other side of the living room, seeing as we played video games a lot it would be a good spot that was also out of the way.
As I pulled open the many treats and toys and set to double checking the puppy proofing of the apartment that we quickly did the night before, DarkCreator took to showing Roxi the crate. Puting up the growing wall to make the crate smaller, the area fit a perfectly, which was placed inside for her. She seemed to take to it easily enough, a few ins and outs to show that it was her bed and where she would stay. Of course it would take some more time but she seemed to get the jest of it.
Next on the list was a set of rules and guide lines. Both of us having dogs in the past knew the basics.
- No human food till she was older.
- No sleeping in the bed with us till she was older.
- No jumping up or on furniture unless invited.
- Anything given to her she has to do a trick for first.
And so forth.
We decided to take to the “” practice and over time we added new rules as we learned about our little pup and learned ourselves how to take care of a dog without parental assistance.
After an hour or so of cuddling, reassurance and play with her new toys we ended up laying on the floor at her level on our backs while she bounced between us. In this moment we established the “hup” trick. After a few moments of her hopping on our bellies.
We learned that day that Roxi is very cuddly. She loves to chase balls and sometimes brings it back (). She already feels bad when given a strict “NO!” and isn’t timid.
After a big day that evening we felt like the luckiest parents in the world. Acting like she’d lived there for years we decided to use “Roxi bedtime” to tell her to go into the crate. Putting one of our shirts in there with her we closed the crate, said goodnight and went to bed.
There wasn’t a peep the whole night. Though neither parent got a wink of sleep anyways.

It doesn’t sink in that you have a pet until you’re sitting in the back of a bouncing, leaning with a puppy cuddling up against you for comfort.
Two of the brightest golden-brown were constantly staring up at me as this ball of red and white was trying to get as close to me as possible. It’s a hard thing being pulled away from a comfortable setting with two complete strangers in a roaring moving monster, with these strangers making noises at one another constantly.
But those eyes... I fell in love with her in that moment of being the comfort she needed. Learning instantly that from then on, I would be the one to take care of her. As my mom always said, its always like having a young with you. Its also probably why people say to own a pet before thinking about children.
She was a ball of but a brave and outward little thing already. While scared, she didn’t show it as I’ve seen with the past puppies my family first got. We stopped at a small town pet store on the way home. Decided not to buy the needed items until we were sure we were going to get a puppy. We just didn’t figure that we would actually get one that exact day.
At first DarkCreator went in to purchase a few things but then came out seconds later and motioned me to come in with the puppy.
The instant we walked in the shop keeper knew where the puppy came from and who bred it. Perking up happily and bustling around the shop to help us find what was needed. We got most of the needed supplies right there, even a that would have been more expensive at the chain pet stores.
Our little pup explored shyly as we discussed what was needed and got , a and a . She did the little “” dance for a second after the shopkeeper put her on the counter and put the collar on but it only lasted a moment. Everyone in the store seemed to enjoy following her around and seeing what she was up to. She was already showing her corgi side.. Taking a moment to pick out and pull a treat out of a bin and eat it.
Paying for the supplies we hopped right back into the jeep and off we went. The shopkeeper giving us even more advice on how to take care of our new little girl. Waving joyfully as we left.
As we traveled we discussed names. Instantly DarkCreator offered the usual fan flick name of from the well known anime . I vetoed this knowing full well that 1. A lot of corgis are probably named this and 2. Our anime friends would probably never leave us alone about it. He then offered because of her like appearance. Once again I said no but then offered an alternative, Roxi. With an I of course. It was then decided... Foxy Roxi being a nickname now. I do feel a little nerved though not remembering at the time that Roxi was a popular name due to the movie . Now instead of the , everyone asks if we named her after Roxi in the movie... Oh well.. You can’t win them all I guess.
A few hours later we returned home and carried her up the stairs to our apartment, taking turns to gather the new items from the car that will later take over our floors and life.
Roxi was home at last and we had our very first puppy.
