Florida Corgi Picnic

I want to wish all the attendees a grand time at the picnic in FL this weekend. I will not be able to attend as I will be enjoying Pine Mountain Ga attending the national corgi speciality. There will be several of our wonderful Sunshine Corgi Rescue volunteers in attendance. If you see them take time to give that a pat on the back. Without the help of these wonderful folks we would not have been able to take in over 80 dogs already this year. Know that I will be with you all in spirit. Hug your… Continue

Good night sweet Zen

Wanted to share that I helped my dear rescue boy Zen cross the bridge on October 16. Zen arrived in my home in June 07 in horrible condition. Bless his heart I didnt even know where to start to try to bring this boy to some sort of reasonable health. The problems were many including severe hair loss, fungus infections of his ears and feet, he was deaf, had a misshapen ear due to an untreated hematoma, visually impaired probably due to chronic eye infections, a broken tail that was never tended t… Continue

Training classes

I have seen many posts on this list with pups that are challenging. I often recommend dog training classes. They offer so much more than most people know. I think EVERY dog and their owner should attend at the minimum of one basic obedience class. If you purchase a pup I think a puppy kindergarten class and basic obedience class is in order. ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIALIZATION - Obedience classes give your dog the opportunity to be in a different environment with different smells, noises and distraction… Continue

Independence Day of a different sort

Hi gang, My dear Deion's DM has been progressing rapidly. I have tried two different carts for the last six weeks with little to no success. It is heartbreaking to watch the decline of such a proud and kind fellow who has shared my life for near 10 years. This past Tuesday gave me quite a scare. Deion didn't get up at all. He laid under the bed from early morning until early evening. He just seemed worried. I picked him up and brought him outside at this time and he just wouldn't eliminate. He c… Continue

House Training 101

I have seen a multitude of posts regarding housetraining so thought I would construct information that would serve as basic guidelines of how to train and what to expect. We all get excited about bringing that new puppy home but remember, it takes lots of work to help that pup grow up to be a cherished companion. It doesnt happen magically and takes input, time, love and patience from you, the owner. Generally pups come to their new homes between 8 - 10 weeks. This is quite an overwhelming time… Continue

Sam, I was looking at your pictures and the corgi has a wheel chair it looks like? If you dont mind me asking what happened. My neighbor has a Dashound that is in one of them also. She jumped off the bed when she was a pup and broke her back. Also I think it is fantastic that you are into corgi rescue.

Hi Sam, Thanks for your reply.
Yes Bailey is neutered and has graduated from his puppy class with flying colours. In the class, he was perfect and mastered all commands but the moment we got home, he would torment Truffle. I guess it's just him being a boy and in his teenager stage, where energy is abundant and he just want to play all the time. I make the effort to walk them everyday and let them run and chase in the field to vent their energy. They would be exhausted but when we got home, Bailey would continue to annoy Truffle, which then ends up with fights. Do you think it's a personality problem?

Hi Sam,
I need your help and opinion on this please. Bailey is now 9 months old and Truffle 21/2 +. Since I bought Bailey home, I think Truffle just tolerates him but doesn't bond with him. They don't get along as well as I would love them to. Is this normal for them to play fight all the time? sometimes i have no idea whether they are playing or really fighting. Bailey is the one, who usually starts the neck/butt/legs biting then Truffle would get really agitated and bites back.
I just can't put them in the same room at the moment because they would just constantly fight, which defeats the whole purpose of getting Bailey. (To be a companion for Truffle)
I'm having our first human baby due in Jan and I don't think I could cope if the two doggy kids keep on misbehaving and resenting each other and fight incessantly.
Any suggestions? perhaps we have done something wrong in the training or is it just personality mismatch? How do i get them to like each other?
Help! Thanks so much.

Thank you for the input, Sam. I told the breeder I really appreciated that they care about the pup's health so much! I hope my little guy grows up to be as healthy and beautiful as any of yours. :]

Good to know.. growing up I wanted a border collie and ducks. Then I fell in love with Corgis.. but I could still go for a couple of ducks. I suppose I'll have to check the city ordinances for that one :) Thank you for all your great advice- perfect for us first timers.

Thanks for the kind words Di. That is my goal and I think this forum is a way for me to reach many people. I adore our enchanted breed and hope to make life good for as many as I can. Rescue puts one in a totally new mindset. I see how many great dogs are given up by no fault of their own and how quickly they respond to an appropriate home. So many problems can be fixed with a bit of learning, training and practice. So much information is available on the net and I find it sad that more folks dont use this to their advantage BEFORE getting that cute pup.

I like the picture with the geese! Our vet asked us when we were going to get Owen some geese to herd :) I told him when he learns to herd the socks without trying to swallow them when we are doing laundry then we'd talk. Looks like your dogs are having a blast!
